Although the ensemble consisting of two houses of differing size adopts the dominant typology of the two to three-storey gable roofed housing of its Cologne suburb, the reduction to essentials results in an abstraction of the house type. The solid, monolithic appearance is enhanced by the use of natural stone veneer cladding of grey Italian sandstone. Tapered reveals on one side of the windows to improve the entry of light also give expression to the cubic form of the house. Smooth, and without projections or overhangs, the zinc roof completes the picture of restrained material use.
