Modern Vernacular Guest Cottage | The Palatine Studio | Charlottesville | Virginia | Montgomery + Townsend Architecture and Design

The Palatine Studio is a small backyard jewelry studio, wood shop, and guest cottage sited on a steep hill. With its gabled form and horizontal exterior cladding, the Palatine Studio is a vernacular reference to the neighborhood’s surrounding houses. This referential exterior form is then manipulated by outwardly sloping the east and north walls, creating an unexpected disruption to the form. Beyond this visual experience, the sloped walls compress the space above the eastern entrance path. The minimal sculptural details of the exterior not only shed the viewer’s assumptions of the form, but also draw the focus back to the simple experience of the form in its simplicity, and the space it inhabits. Upon entering the studio door threshold, the stairwell--painted the same color as the exterior, with the same slate chips--creates a material relationship to the exterior while also unfolding a notably tall space for such a small building. As the viewer ascends the stairs, the space again compresses to the top, leading to a small opening filled with contrasting white light. This is the jewelry studio, which is open and lined--walls, floor, and ceiling--with white pine. Canadian Modern House | The Clear Lake Cottage | Canada | MJMA

A Toronto family of five requested a cottage that is ‘modern and open’ but retains a quintessential ‘cottage feel’. The building was to be commodious and accommodate extended family but should avoid ostentation in scale and modernity.

The Clear Lake Cottage proposes a simple tent-like envelope to house both program and outdoor spaces under a single vernacular form. A singular roof presents a child-like impression of house; rectilinear and ordered in symmetry while playfully skewed in volume. Nestled within a forest, the building is sculpted and stepped to take advantage of the land; modeling the natural grade. Open and closed faces respond to shoreline views or quiet wooded depths. Like a tent the porosity of the building’s envelope strengthens the experience of ‘cottage’.

Three volumes: a communal space, a bedroom bar, and a master suite are registered in response to the site to achieve views, separation, and privacy. The roof peak creates a sleeping loft, and enhances the communal space. The plan aligns a series of large sliding windows for summer cross ventilation. The tent-like 'big top' of the Douglas Fir interior has three exterior spaces carved into it to create sheltered outdoor areas. The relationship to site, the transition spaces, and operable transparent skin connects to this privileged landscape.....more

This project continues the Southern Ontario tradition of cottaging, while pushing the typology beyond one of occasional use into a year round dwelling.
The home immerses itself in the surroundings, drawing from the beauty of the entire site, in addition to the powerful focus of the lake.
Clean, modern spaces, rich in material and texture, in concert with a solid sustainable foundation results in enduring architecture.
The side-split massing integrates naturally into the site; conforming to a subtle shift in the underlying Canadian Shield and minimizing the overall presence of the building on the site.
The efficient steel and engineered wood structure allows a delicate glazed skin to wrap the main volume, emphasized by a simple roof plane that connects the main program elements.....more

Hurteau Miller Residence | Québec | Kariouk Associates

The spatial system of this cottage is conceived as a porous and open ground-floor that supports a solid, “private”, volume above. All of the primary living and communal functions, such as the indoor and outdoor living rooms, kitchen and eating area, and sauna open either literally or volumetrically to the surrounding lakeshore. The master bedroom suite is also placed on the ground floor since the house is meant to be a home for a lifetime and issues of future accessibility are thus addressed. The upper volume, a heavier wooden box clad of Western Red cedar, is cradled by the seemingly delicate armature below and houses spaces that are introverted, namely the son’s bedroom and guest sleeping areas. A public cottage located in a heaviest snowfall region in Japan, often as deep as 4 m. The architectyure is composed of 2 volumes. Big Box as the outer form finished in black is designed for the maxiimum volume possible within the given budget and realized with details in accordance with local techniques for withstanding heavy snow. The essential functions for living were placed in a row called Tube. It is finished in white. Upon integratinf the two, Tube is bent comlicatedly by the restriciton of Big Box, and Big Box is cut irregularky by the bent Tube. The Gap between both generates an unexpected space. The two space makes the contrastive viewpoint which looks at surrounding nature. The exterior wall is finished in the traditional way of this region. It looks like local houses which locals are used to seeing and not consious of it : a consideration that the site is within in a park. The Cottage is disposed according to the axis of north, south, east and west. Therefore, they are conscious of the cardinal points as an axis of the earth........more

Guest House | Highveld Pavilion | Johannesburg, South Africa | studioMAS

Architect's statement
This private guest cottage is situated in a lush smallholding along the Vaal River in Vanderbjlpark south of Johannesburg. The buildings function is as garden pavilions, with open entertain areas that also provide weekend accommodation. The building maximises the scenic surrounding by providing complete visual connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.


The building consists of two parallel blocks set within the densely treed landscape. They are connected by a garden wall along their eastern façades, creating an intimate courtyard space. The illusion of being completely outside while inside is enhanced by the use of frameless glazing on all sides as well as seamless external floor finishes. Bedroom suites feature open plan bathrooms as well as an intimate television lounge. Laser cut artworks by Willem Boschoff slide across the façade providing an interesting and beautiful solution for adjustable privacy.
