SPG Architects transformed an abandoned steel frame and concrete slab structure into a five-level, 18000 SF, indoor-outdoor residence on a rain-forested mountainside overlooking the Golfo Dulce. The house is environmentally sensitive, technologically advanced, and modernist by design. A flexible building perimeter provides a seamless flow from inside to out that completely blends the built environment with the natural setting and the spectacular views. The house is energy self-sufficient - appliances and lighting were chosen for low power consumption that is sourced by photovoltaic cells on the roof. Solar hot water panels provide domestic hot water. Maximizing cross ventilation and ample overhangs have eliminated the need for air conditioning in this year-round tropical climate. Leicester House | Asheville (Leicester), North Carolina | SPG Architects

This hilltop residence, located at the edge of a wooded knoll in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, has expansive southern and western views. Approaching through the woods, one arrives at a one-story façade of corten steel framed by wood. A hint of the views is provided through the glass door, but it is not until entry that the full impact of the hilltop views can be experienced. The south and west glass walls open to rolling farmland below and the mountains beyond. The entry level serves as the primary living area, with a guest wing carved into the hilltop below. The house is functional, energy efficient and visually inspiring. The ‘greening’ of the house complements its visual warmth, grounding the modern structure in its rural landscape. This 6,000 square foot vacation home is located in the high desert of central Idaho. A 5-Bedroom house with a loft-like living space, it provides a sophisticated and relaxing year-round retreat for its New York City owners. Aluminum fenestration throughout the fir-sided, steel-framed and poured-in-place concrete structure carefully frames the picturesque and dramatic landscape of Sun Valley. The interior furnishings and architectural form of the structure are expressed in a unified luminous palette of materials that provide a harmonious environment for living. Greenwich Village Townhouse | New York City | SPG Architects

The renovation of this townhouse began with extensive demolition for structural reasons. It was completely gutted and re-oriented toward the rear garden. The stair was moved off of the south party wall, which was plastered smooth and only delicately touched by any adjacent architecture. The north party wall was densely packed with maple cabinetry, linking spaces front to back visually. The internal space, left open at every floor, has clearly defined volumes at the center. These polished plaster boxes, containing the discrete functions of bathrooms and closets, set the edges of living spaces. Large panels, both solid and translucent, slide or pivot to close off or open up the malleable programmatic arrangements, allowing for privacy or connection as conditions require. The front facade was restored in accordance with local landmark requirements and the rear façade was built anew of glass and steel with cement board infill panels......more
