This art studio for both drawing and painting, in addition to providing for the amenities of storage, cooking, cleaning, and reading, posed the problem of how to achieve extreme horizontal openness in order to move freely within the studio. It is based upon an expanded NYC loft typology that has been displaced to the countryside. The design focuses on constructing a hollowed out bubble uninterrupted by structure. This dictated the design of the structural system and enabled a column free interior with moment frames on each end that would serve as external porches and viewing spaces between nature and the built environment.........more

St. Helena Retreat | Napa valley California | Butler Armsden Architect

A couple looking for a place to retire in St. Helena, in the Napa Valley of California, settled on this secluded but close to downtown "L" shaped lot for the site of their modern retreat. The main house is set back from the street, and is separated from the garage and studio by a lap pool that doubles as a reflecting pool for the facade. The main room of the house is two stories tall, and opens through triple sliding doors to similarly tall exterior space that is protected by a large roof overhang. The house and garage/studio form bookends to the pool and exterior space in between, creating a private world that is just a five minute walk from downtown St. Helena.......more

The studio was built with minimal impact on the shoreland and vegetation. With the bark-like texture of the red cedar shingles and the transparent connection to the ground, the architecture becomes a part of the Maine woods. Architects Nick Roberts and Cory Buckner designed a weekend studio for their use in the Malibu hills. With the use of fire safe materials and site orientation, the 700 sq. ft. Malibu Studio is built to address the views and extreme fire conditions that often plague Malibu.

House with a Dance Studio | Austin, Texas | Rick Black Architect

This project is a result a lengthy and close collaboration between Rick and the artist Jose Luis Bustamante. It serves as a place for work,solitude and contemplation of the land. The building accommodates Jose's living quarters and his 'laboratory' for the exploration of video projection and dance. At ground level, the large open rehearsal space has the proportion of a stage. The upper level wraps around two sides of the rehearsal space and has sliding doors that create a mezzanine from which to observe the project.
The living quarters is air conditioned but operable steel panels provide passive cooling most of the year. From the second floor, turkey vultures are often seen at eye level, gliding on the thermal of the ravine.
The artistic intention of the project is a feeling of lightness achieved with mass.

Günther Domenig: Steinhaus--Stonehouse -- Günther Domenig is known as a non-conformist in the Austrian architectural scene. Steinhaus--Stonehouse tells the story of the conception and construction of his home and studio within a remote mountain landscape.
Steinhaus--Stonehouse tells the story of the conception and construction of a home cum studio cum intellectual haven for the architect in a landscape which has been part of his personal memory bank of images since childhood. Though the interest in this Folio lies undoubtedly in its description of a particular and highly personal creative process, the problems of response to site, landscape, image and memory which the architect confronts have a wider resonance. This Folio contains twenty-two plates of sketches, drawings and computer drawings by the architect plus an illustrated booklet which documents through an interview, photographs, poems and sketches, the particular context within which Domenig's work has grown and the story of the development of the Steinhaus project.

This project was developed for an artist with a twofold program: home and studio, to be resolved spatially together and functionally separate.

It was built in a corner of land highly inclined, with 10 meters measured between high and low points.
The land fronting quiet streets and wooded area, in a large corner
and a broad view of the valley of the Rio Tiete, the Main River city of São Paulo

A building designed as follows essentially simple, crude, in its
constitution. But it is sweetened by delicate adjustment of the elements of construction
