This private residence commands views of the Atlantic Ocean to the east and a fresh water pond to the west from its location on the shore of Long Island.

Upon arrival from a quiet lane visitors are greeted by a planar facade of solid stone, punctured by the occasional opening. By contrast, on the south side of the property, the house unfolds sculpturally to present an open and transparent facade to the beach and the ocean beyond.

Boasting one of the most scenic settings in Sydney, the site of Prince Henry at Little Bay is loaded with history. Firstly as a significant aboriginal site; since the 1880s an important coastal hospital with a rich legacy collection of public buildings; and in 1969 the site of the memorable Christo’s “Wrapped Coast”.

This house design is a viewing platform to the amazing landscape and its historical context.

The unique aspect of the development is its simplicity and the reduction to the essential. The client and the Architect worked together to remove all the unnecessary gadgets and accessories normally attached to waterfront property.

The street access flows seamlessly to the open living space – which is designed as a vast platform cantilevered toward the view. The service area turns its back to the view, as a clear separation of work and play. The lower level, in contact with the garden, contains the bedrooms, laundry and garage – strictly functional. No swimming pool, nor family nor breakfast rooms clutter the plan of the house.

The simplicity of the plan disguises the elaborate energy saving and climate control measures adopted that make air-conditioning unnecessary.........more

This new construction, approximately 3,000 s.f. home is placed on a tight infill Manhattan Beach lot. The placement and massing of the house is a response to local zoning codes and internal programmatic needs. We rotated the south wing of the house sixteen degrees towards the San Gabriel Mountains and Downtown LA. This also helped the internal and external spaces feel more dynamic. Exterior cement plaster and cedar siding were carried inside to the central stair and circulation space..........more

This is the finest private residence we have ever designed, for both the level of quality and the magnificence of the site. It was designed for a couple whose commitment to the art of design is unparalleled and whose trust and appreciation never wavered.

The pair of ocean front houses, on adjacent lots in Montauk, New York, were designed to capture that rarest of assets: large private outdoor space on the Atlantic. The main house is earthbound: a low-slung single story composed of an open (steel and glass) wing and an embracing (brick and wood) one. Only the writing studio and outdoor fireplaces top the single story height.

The guest house, by contrast, is airborne, barely touching the ground and creating a series of covered spaces and processional gateways to the main house. The guesthouse is, as we thought of it, the second floor of the main house, dislocated to the entry side of the site where it can participate in defining the large landscaped courtyard hovering 75 feet above the ocean............more

The irony of not having direct view of the ocean on a seaside house appears as a possibility for orienting this beach house towards a more unexpected landscape. The open horizon of the Pacific has been replaced by the view the near hillsides to the west, and to the protected space defined by a group of preexisting trees. This independent backyard, isolated from the intense summer life of the beach town of Cachagua, offers a calmed retreat to take distance from the city. Here, the close relation to topography stimulates spontaneous exterior circulations between rooms, giving the same relevance to the interior life of the house as to the exterior events, trying to enhance the informal condition of the beach house and the possibility of a life “outdoors”......more

In order to conceal this home from its uphill neighbors a shelf was cut into the narrow slice of grassland located between an access road on one side and the steep slopes of the West Coast on the other. The uphill land extends as a green roof over the underground portions of the home-terminating on the gently curved roof of the living room.
All utilities, including the 5000 gallon water storage tank, were placed underground in order to preserve the surrounding landscape........more

This beach house for Tom and Annie Smith is located less than 100 meters from the Caribbean Sea and surrounded by a lush tropical rainforest. They wished to provide a view to the ocean from every space in the house while also integrating the large trees in the forest around them. The house was then placed longitudinally along the beachfront dividing the private (bedrooms) and public spaces (living, dining, and kitchen) with the entrance. This narrow site in the heart of Elwood had flood level challenges as well as the difficult founding soil typical of the area. Screw piles went over 7m down to support the house. The solution drew inspiration from the surrounding context. Soft beach sand coloured render; large recycled posts and beams reflecting the bay pier structures; and a dramatic 25m long fish scale zinc wall which satisfied the Rescode setbacks while invigorating the house with the aquatic organic.
