In the vicinity of Buitenland, a hamlet of Bornem, META Architectuurbureau realizes a pool house in the garden of an existing house. The green domain of the house is bordered on both the front and rear by the Kwaedhuyskensloop stream.

Within these limits, the pool house, terrace and swimming pond form a succession of elongated surfaces that divide the plot into garden rooms over its entire width.

The concrete walls of the pool house are only interrupted by storey-high steel window doors, which blur the boundary with the covered part of the terrace. Sauna and shower room overlook the flowers and plants in the natural purification basin of the swimming pond. In the large multipurpose room, the open-plan copper kitchen and the concrete fireplace, the chimney of which extends far above the roof, are the only permanent elements.......more

The site is slanted toward the river, and the north wind peculiar to this place goes down the slope. The house is plotted parallel to the river, and the shape sticking out of the slope looks like a ship waiting for the launching.Two volumes are divided into two abstract, one as private space with child room and master bedroom and another as public space with kitchen and living room. The outside deck space between the two volumes is used as an outside dining. And on the upper part parallel with the river, bathroom and the guesthouse are located. Set on a steep site overlooking the Derwent River, the house addresses a large Bluegum and copse of tall silver gums. Vertical circulation starts level with the canopy and descends with views through branches, stepping down the trunk until you reach the lower level where the tree passes through the deck. Our clients had bought an old barn on a beautiful 2ha site bordering the river Linge. We were asked to help realize their dream of a large kitchen living room where they could relax, entertain friends and organize wine tasting sessions for their customers.
In the past, the previous owners had already realized an extension by simply extruding the high barn, adding 10 meters, in two floors.
At our first visit we found the house difficult to inhabit. Most strikingly, virtually no relation existed to the beautiful landscape surrounding the house. All façade openings were too small, in the wrong place, or both. We proposed to invert the layout of the house, moving the offices and storage space to occupy the recent extension and the private spaces to the old barn. A large slit was cut into the barn roof to bring in light. The final touch was a large piece of furniture that would serve as kitchen, storage, stairs and library all at once.......more

The River House is a weekend retreat located on the Rappahannock River in Virginia. Sited on a pre-engineered and cleared site, the 3500- square-foot house marks the intersection of three landscapes: natural forest, wetlands, and a mile-wide river. The long and slender house is comprised of nine-and-one-half 12’ x 22’ structural steel bays (8 bays of interior space and 1.5 bays of screened porch) sitting on poured concrete foundation walls which were left partially exposed due to the steeply sloping site. By divorcing the primary skin of the house from the steel structure, large sliding glass doors could be used as the only barrier between interior and exterior. As a result, all interior spaces offer uninterrupted views out to the river. The house is divided into three components: the main house, the guest quarters, and a multi-purpose level. To maximize interior space and privacy of the main house, the entry porch acts as circulation to the guest rooms. Translucent panels allow daylight into the stair to the lower level. The owners appreciate the natural beauty found in raw construction materials and challenged Ziger/Snead to compose their home with simple building materials.
